Gunner 1072323 76 Field Regiment Royal Artillery Herbert was born in 1909, the son of William and Kate Wall, and the 1911 census records that his family was living in Coventry. In this photograph Herbert is wearing the uniform worn by the Royal Artillery between 1903 and 1937. By 1937 most batteries had adopted motor transport to pull their guns. From his army number we can tell that Herbert joined up in the late 1920s or early 1930s, and we think the picture might have been taken then to show off his new uniform. He was the husband of Violet W Wall of Ash, and they had two children. Violet W Wall is recorded as living at 12 Shawfield Road in the May 1945 electoral register. Mrs Wall lived at 12 Shawfield Road when she sent in her husband's particulars to the Ash Parish Council in 1947. |
