William Gordon Read

William was born in Ash in 1903 and was the only son of William Daniel and Alice Mary Read. William Daniel Read was headmaster at Ash National School, and his wife was infants’ mistress.

William was educated at Ash National School and at Farnham Grammar School. He joined the Merchant Service as a cadet when he was 16, and served with the British India Steam Navigation Company. He was secretary of Aldershot Football Club from 1935 to 1940.

He was commissioned into the Royal Naval Reserve in 1941 and served for about 18 months in the Mediterranean, including during the North Africa landings. He was later stationed at Swansea, and died in hospital in Swansea following an operation.

William’s wife was Edna Mausley Read of Ash Vale, and they had one son.

His parents lived at Guildown in College Road, Ash. They were buried next to him in 1955 and his sister in 1962.
