William was born at Eastbourne in 1893, the son of Thomas and Jane Hedger.

The censuses record that in 1901 the family lived at in Harting in Sussex; and in 1911 at Manor Farm in Frensham, when William and his father were both carters.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records that William was formerly 4939 Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment, posted 7th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. His medals card records that he was formerly 241066 Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment.

Electoral registers confirm that his parents lived at Squillier Cottages in Poyle Road 1922-1939.
