Leonard was the son of Maud Sines of Ash.

Leonard was admitted to Heathcote School on 13 October 1920. His date of birth was given as 25 July 1915 and Mrs Lily Rose was his guardian. Nelson Hearne was admitted 3 April 1922. His date of birth was 27 April 1917 and Mrs Hearn was his parent or Guardian. Both boys lived in the Quadrant at this time, and both left the district and then returned to the same school.

Maud Hearne married John Sines in 1925. John and Maud Sines, and Leonard and Nelson Hearn, are all recorded as living at 61 Grange Cottages in College Road in the 1939 electoral register.
